Self-medication

Those strips of sunburn have caused me more grief than expected this week. They often felt sore/itchy under my work trousers, but I couldn't apply more cream until I got home (I've switched to an antiseptic variety - Savlon). So I'm taking a sickie today. We're far enough advanced with the next issue that it shouldn't inconvenience my colleagues too much.

Would it be possible for you to work from home? Assuming you had video conferencing would it be possible?

Technically, yes. There's nothing - apart from lack of inspiration - stopping me typing a feature story into Microsoft Word right now, then e-mailing it to my work account. And if I owned a copy of Adobe InDesign and had access to the right drives on the company computers, I could sub layouts, too.

The main problem's the amount of liaising I do during the day - with the editor, rest of the subs bench, graphic designers, pre-press staff and editorial coordinator. Video conferencing would help, but nothing beats yelling out your questions across the room :-)

Also, somebody has to be in the office to handle the physical proofs that we send to the printers, and take care of trivial stuff like opening snail mail.

Finally, it'd be a pain to have to interview models from home and get reimbursed for the cost of the calls later - especially in the case of overseas girls.
