"Judge Minty"...

...is a high-quality, "2000AD"-sanctioned fan film set in the world of Judge Dredd. An ageing lawman, no longer able to cut it on the streets but unwilling to retire to a teaching role, opts to take The Long Walk - venturing into the radioactive wasteland outside Mega-City One to bring to justice as many of the crims, mutants and other monsters that dwell there as he can. "Judge Minty" has some cool Cursed Earth music and is 27 minutes well spent. (Thanks to LPO for the good oil.)

Friday night was movie/series night

"This Is The End" (2013): From the freebies box at work... A comedy set during the Apocalypse, with actors playing themselves? Sounds subversive. At times, it feels a tad subversive, too. But in hindsight, it's really just a bunch of mates larking about. Take away Michael Cera and - especially - Danny McBride and it wouldn't be worth the bother.

"Queen's Blade: Exiled Virgin" (2009 Japan, 2013 here): From DL, who isn't into anime... Five hours of swordmaidens'n'saucery - and by "saucery", I mean the most blatant fan service possible. There can't be one fight in this yarn about exotic female warriors duelling for the right to rule that doesn't feature bare boobs, a panty shot or both.

Thursday night was movie night

"The Lords Of Salem" (2013): Intelligent, character-driven horror that leaves it to the viewer to decide which of the vile visions are real.

"The Machine" (also 2013): Successfully combines elements of "Robocop", "Species", "Spooks" and even the great "Blade Runner". Caity Lotz is equally convincing portraying childlike innocence or kicking arse a la Ronda Rousey. Bonus marks for the moody '80s lighting and synth score. Rent it!

"Poker King" (2009): When two people started sharing a single poker hand at a casino table, I ejected the disc and threw this crap in the bin.
