Jiroft

The Jan/Feb 2021 issue of National Geographic's "History" magazine contains a fascinating article about evidence of a possible lost civilisation near Jiroft in modern-day Iran. I say possible because there is debate about at least some of the items (if they belong to known civs, if any were faked to fool the antiquities market). But the argument for is pretty compelling. And whether the dig site turns out to be the city of Aratta mentioned in Sumerian poems, the kingdom of Marhasi referenced in Akkadian records or neither of those, the people *appear* to have had a unique culture and written language, and I'm excited to learn more about them.

If you can't access the mag, the same basic info (though not as well told and minus the stunning photography) may be found in this Wikipedia entry -

Last five movies watched

"Willow" was a rewatch. I borrowed the novelisation from RS in senior high (he'd gotten it from his local library). Then I saw it at the cinema. Then again on VHS, lent to me by JH. Then again when it first hit DVD. Even played the Capcom arcade game. For all that, though, it isn't great! :-)

"The Mars Generation" felt very familiar in places. I'd either caught some before or seen a doco about Space Camp covering a lot of the same ground.

Pick of the bunch: It's easy to be put off by the hype, but "Soul" is a work of art and a true delight. I cried happy tears. If you'd rather more impactful drama, go with "Working Woman". While there've been a string of flicks about older men abusing their power over young women in the workplace, this one is done particularly well and the Israeli setting, erm, sets it apart. Terrific performances.

Pick of the bunch: They were all OK. I don't feel strongly about any of them.
